Middle School Happenings

The Compliment Project
Our 8th grade advisory is spreading a little kindness by beginning the “Compliment Project”. The compliment project is a movement to make the world a better place by seeing the good in others and acknowledging this goodness through the powerful yet simple act of a compliment. Each student took a turn in the “hot seat” while their peers wrote notes positive notes. Once everyone has written their note, the student turned around to read the notes. As you can see from the photos, the joy and sense of belonging during this project was so powerful. I am so proud of our 8th graders for embracing this project with such passion. Enjoy the photos!

Middle School Shadow Day

Last week our fifth graders visited the middle school to get a taste of what they will experience everyday when they move to the middle school. Each fifth grader was given a sixth grade buddy who escorted them from class to class and lunch.

Fifth graders had a great time playing " Would You Rather" in advisory. They visited each academic class, participated in interactive activities, and learned about our rich elective program. At the end of the day each fifth grader received a "Middle School Survival Kit" filled will all kinds of treats! It was a pleasure to host our rising sixth graders . The middle school team is looking forward to teaching them very soon.

Historical Presentations
This week Mr. Niven's eighth grade students completed their study of the Louisiana Purchase by presenting their Lewis and Clark or Native American reflections. Each student chose a significant historical figure, researched, wrote, and presented in the first person their thoughts about the expedition and its impact.
During this project students were able to hone their research, writing, and presentation skills. As expected with this awesome group of students, they supported each other with words of encouragement and provided wonderful peer to peer feedback for future presentations.

Sixth Grade Socratic Smack Down

This week Mrs. Brooks' sixth grade history students enthusiastically demonstrated their knowledge of the famous Greek city states, Athens and Sparta with a spirited Socratic Smackdown. After being assigned to a team, each member worked with a partner to research topics such as education, female rights, military/defense, and lifestyle of their city state. During the smackdown, team members took turns debating their topics while earning points for implementing various discussion skills. The level of engagement shown by the entire class was spectacular and we look forward to our next Socratic Smackdown!
