Building a Brighter Future through a World-Class Education Event

May 27, 2015

Last week, hundreds of education influencers from around the world convened in New York City at Léman Manhattan for the 2015 Oppi Festival, a world-class learning event focused on building the future of education through a fusion of quirky and fun, yet thought-provoking and cutting-edge content.

Among the high-caliber speakers and participants, who included the Director General of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the President of the American Federation of Teachers, were students and teachers from The Village School, North Broward and Léman Manhattan.

One of the key themes at Oppi this year was “Global Collaboration,” which directly ties to our unique approach to personalized global learning. Driven by incredible teachers, personalized instruction and innovative global experiences, our students graduate with the critical-thinking and higher-order-reasoning skills needed to pursue a meaningful and purposeful life of learning.

At Oppi, North Broward and Village participated in the session, “What does a global education truly mean?” One student proclaimed, “If we’re given opportunities to travel and meet new people, we can more fully experience it with a global education,” while another had to say: “Being open to other cultures is always there inside of you, you just need to unlock it.”

Students from Léman Manhattan, which was Oppi’s venue partner, led an engaging small-group discussion that demonstrated how the IB Diploma Programme addresses the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students, and builds engaged critical thinkers and problem solvers. The session challenged participants to think outside the box when assessing regular, every day issues. The Director General of the IB, Dr. Siva Kumari, was one of the session participants and was impressed with the Léman students’ facilitation skills!

Our participation in the Oppi Festival was a fantastic educational and leadership opportunity for our students and staff. They were able to showcase how our approach to education creates positive student outcomes to the hundreds of prolific teachers, academics, policy makers and education influencers who attended. Through Oppi, we’re able to show our dedication to building the future of education, and preparing our students to thrive in today’s global economy.
