The Power of Studying Abroad with ACIS

Are you ready to change your life with a study abroad experience? If so, you’re in luck this semester. Lake Mary Prep will be partnering with ACIS, the American Council for International Studies, for a study abroad adventure of a lifetime.

Here at Lake Mary Prep, we believe that students should be exposed to the world beyond the classroom and ignite their curiosity with cultures from around the world.

Students within the Upper School will have the opportunity to travel abroad on three exclusive trips to Iceland, the Dominican Republic or European capitals, including London, Paris and Rome.

Who Is ACIS?

ACIS is an educational travel company whose core belief is travel changes lives. They provide round-trip flights, centrally located hotels, daily breakfast and dinner, and 24-hour tour managers.

Their tours are carefully crafted with trip itineraries customized to fulfill classroom learning objectives while still embracing and absorbing cultures. ACIS says that through educational travel, “students gain new insights into their own culture and a more global perspective—so important in today’s interconnected world.”

9th & 10th Grade: Discovering STEM in Iceland

October 6 to October 11, 2018 ï $3,579

Ninth and tenth grade students who participate in the program will travel to Iceland with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

This six-day trip will kickstart in the capital city of Reykjavik where students will have the chance to explore a five-exhibition museum of Icelandic history at Viking World. Throughout the rest of the experience, students will travel to six cities with some the most stunning natural geologic attractions such as Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss waterfalls, the massive Dyrhólaey stone arch, Sóheimajökull glacier and much more.

This trip is filled with natural wonders that allow students to learn about alternative energy sources and discover how layers of glacial ice can tell us about global climate change.

11th Grade: Youth Leadership in the Dominican Republic

October 6 to October 13, 2018 ï $3,079

Eleventh graders can head down to the Caribbean for an eight-day community service and leadership opportunity in the Dominican Republic.

Students land in Santiago but head over to Sosúa the next day where they will work on the Río Grande Abajo Community Project. For the project, students will work on tasks anywhere from building stoves to developing sustainable recycling programs for an agriculturally based community.

During the rest of the trip, students will attend leadership workshops at the Dominican Republic Education and Mentoring Project (DREAM) and will also learn about public health issues and community engagement at Deportes Para La Vida.

From Sosúa to Santo Domingo, students will be charmed by the region’s cultural heritage and the extraordinary beauty of its

beaches and caves. The Dominican Republic is a great place for students to practice their Spanish, engage in public outreach and expand their skills.

12th Grade: European Capitals

October 6 to October 13, 2018 ï $3,578

London, Paris and Rome—the ultimate Europe itinerary. These capitals offer a rich introduction to the continent for 12 graders.

The eight-day trip beings in London for two days where students will be able to explore the city’s remarkable neighborhoods and experience a panoramic sightseeing tour of Trafalgar Square, the Houses of Parliament and Whitehall.

The next two days will be spent in Paris where students will get to see the city’s most impressive sights like the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame. Later students will explore the Louvre, the center of Parisian culture and home to many famous masterpieces like the Mona Lisa.

The last leg of the trip ends in Rome where students will gaze upon the architectural wonders of the ancient world. Students will be accompanied by local experts through the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. This trip will be filled with rich history and authentic, delicious cuisine.

We’re delighted to share this educational opportunity for our students to improve their language skills and personal development. This is just a glimpse of a week of discovery for our students. Further details will be provided at the beginning for the fall semester
