Our head athletic trainer, Bonnie Brewer, is Lake Mary Preparatory School's Certified Licensed Athletic Trainer, and is present at every home athletic event. Bonnie is also available in the training room at designated times to all student-athletes for evaluation, treatment, and taping.
Due to liability, any student-athlete injuries that occur off campus or during non-LMP programs should be referred to a Primary Care Physician, and then reported to Bonnie upon return to campus.
Florida laws and FHSAA regulations require that all coaches and/or athletic trainers immediately remove student-athletes from practice or competition if they have sustained a head injury.
All concussions are considered serious injuries that can alter the way the brain functions. If a student-athlete is removed from his or her respective sport for a concussion, paperwork with symptoms to be aware of and other important concussion information will be given to the student-athlete to review with a parent or guardian. The injured student-athlete must obtain a physician’s clearance before returning to practice or play.
The Brain Association of Florida estimates that more than 40 percent of its patients with serious head injuries are permitted to return to competition or practice before their symptoms have fully dissipated.
Before a student-athlete’s season begins he/she will meet with Bonnie Brewer during one of the designated times to be ImPACT (Immediate Post-concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) baseline tested on campus.
This initial test is a baseline that is incorporated into the assessment and treatment of suspected concussions. If a student-athlete is suspected to have a head injury, he/she will take a post-injury test and the scores are compared to their baseline. Any discrepancy in the scores helps determine if an injury has occurred, and scores must return to baseline before a student-athlete can be cleared by a physician.
The process of returning to play after a concussion is lengthy and requires time, patience, and full cooperation. A student-athlete who sustains a concussion will need to see a physician and obtain an AT18 once they decide to clear the student-athlete. This form needs to be submitted to Bonnie in order to begin the return to play protocol:
Heat Illness/Heat Stroke Awareness and Prevention
